This is a phrase that a dear friend used to describe her past with a certain love interest.
I’ve been kind of mesmerized by the phrase since I heard it.
I thought it beautifully described the pull towards each other, all the attention and yet the invisible centripetal force that simultaneously separated them–keeping this magical distance between them. It sounded so much better than the oft-used phrase “checking each other out” or “just kind of noticing each other.”
Though, further listening seemed to reveal that it was, in fact, quite tormenting… Not quite as romantic as it had originally sounded to me. After all, I guess unrequited love is just tormenting. It only looks pretty and romantic when you are not in the midst of it yourself…
